The upcoming 4 November 2026 Local Government Elections represent a major realignment in South African politics. This is the first municipal poll following the creation of the national multi-party Government of National Unity (GNU).

  • The Johannesburg Crunch: The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) confirmed that the City of Johannesburg has recorded the highest number of political parties contesting Proportional Representation (PR) seats in history. According to the latest Ipsos Pulse of the People study, the ANC’s 31% to the DA’s 28% margin mirrors their 2021 results (33.6% vs 26.5%), confirming that neither party can secure an outright majority without local coalition partners.
